Your customer just bought a digital product from your store. They check their inbox and see the download email. But instead of seeing your brand in the "From" field, they see something like noreply@some-app-name.com. It looks impersonal. It might even look suspicious. Some customers will not open it at all.
This is the reality for most Shopify merchants selling digital products. The app handling their delivery sends emails from the app's own domain — not the merchant's. For a customer who just trusted your brand with their money, receiving an email from an unfamiliar sender is a jarring experience.
With Alva Digital Downloads, merchants on Pro and Enterprise plans can now send every download email from their own domain. Instead of a generic app sender address, your customers see downloads@yourbrand.com — or whatever address you choose. This post explains why that matters and exactly how to set it up.
Why Does Your Email Sender Address Matter?
The "From" address on your download email is not just a cosmetic detail. It has measurable effects on your business.
Brand Recognition and Trust
When a customer sees downloads@yourbrand.com in their inbox, they immediately know who it is from. There is no moment of confusion, no hesitation about whether to open it. The email feels like a natural extension of the purchase experience — because it is.
Contrast this with a generic app sender address. The customer has to read the subject line, maybe even open the email, before they realize it is the download they paid for. That friction is small, but it compounds across every order.
Higher Open Rates
Email open rates are directly influenced by sender recognition. According to research by Campaign Monitor, 68% of consumers decide whether to open an email based on the "From" name alone. When customers recognize your brand in the sender field, they open faster. When they do not recognize the sender, the email often sits unread or gets filtered.
For digital product sellers, an unopened download email means the customer never receives what they paid for — leading to support tickets, refund requests, and chargebacks. Higher open rates translate directly to fewer support issues.
Deliverability and Spam Filtering
Modern email providers like Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo use sender reputation as a key factor in deliverability decisions. When you send from your own verified domain with proper DKIM and Return-Path records, email providers can confirm the email is legitimately from you. This improves inbox placement and reduces the chance of your download emails landing in spam or promotions tabs.
Shared sender domains — where thousands of different merchants all send from the same app address — carry shared reputation risk. If another merchant on the same shared domain sends problematic emails, it can affect deliverability for everyone.
Professional Appearance
Customers notice details. A download email from downloads@yourbrand.com signals that you run a professional operation. It tells customers you have invested in the details of their experience. For merchants selling premium digital products — courses, software, professional templates — this matters more than you might think.

How Do I Set Up a Custom Email Domain on Shopify?
Alva's custom email domain feature lets you register your domain, verify it with DNS records, and start sending download emails from your own address. The entire process takes about 10 minutes of active work, plus some time for DNS propagation.
How It Works
When you add a custom domain in Alva, we generate the DNS records needed to verify ownership and enable authenticated sending. Once you add these records to your domain, Alva verifies them and starts sending from your domain immediately.
Two types of DNS records are involved:
- DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail): A CNAME record that adds a cryptographic signature to every email sent from your domain. This signature proves to receiving email servers that the email was actually authorized by your domain and has not been tampered with in transit. DKIM is the gold standard for email authentication.
- Return-Path (Bounce Tracking): A CNAME record that routes bounce notifications through your domain. This helps email providers associate bounce handling with your domain's reputation, further improving deliverability. It also ensures that if an email bounces (invalid address, full inbox, etc.), the bounce data feeds back into your domain's reputation rather than a shared one.
Once both records are verified, every download email Alva sends on your behalf will pass DKIM authentication and use your domain for bounce handling — giving your emails the highest level of trust with receiving email servers.
Setup Guide: Step by Step
Setting up a custom email domain in Alva requires three things: a domain you own, access to your domain's DNS settings, and an Alva Pro or Enterprise plan. Here is the complete process.
Open Custom Domain Settings
In your Alva Digital Downloads admin, navigate to Settings and find the Custom Email Domain section. Click Set Up Custom Domain to begin.
Enter Your Domain
Type in the domain you want to send from — for example, yourbrand.com. You do not need to enter the full email address here, just the domain. Alva will register the domain and generate the DNS records you need to add.
Add DNS Records
Alva will display two CNAME records that you need to add to your domain's DNS settings. Log in to your domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare, Google Domains, etc.) and add both records.
The records will look something like this:
The exact values will be specific to your domain. Alva displays them with copy buttons so you can paste them directly into your DNS panel.
Verify Your Domain
After adding the DNS records, return to Alva and click Verify Domain. DNS changes can take anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours to propagate, though most registrars propagate within 15–30 minutes.
Alva checks both the DKIM and Return-Path records. Once both are verified, the status will change to Verified and your custom domain is active immediately. All subsequent download emails will be sent from your domain.
Set Your From Address
Once verified, go to your email settings and set your preferred "From" email address on your verified domain. Common choices include downloads@yourbrand.com, orders@yourbrand.com, or noreply@yourbrand.com. This is the address your customers will see in their inbox.
Instant Activation
Once your domain is verified, there is no delay. The very next download email Alva sends will come from your custom domain. Existing download links and email templates continue to work exactly as before — only the sender address changes.
What Happens If I Downgrade My Plan?
Custom email domains are available on Pro ($18.99/month) and Enterprise ($28.99/month) plans. If you downgrade to the Basic or Free plan, Alva automatically reverts to sending from the default sender address. Your DNS records remain in place (they do not cause any issues), so if you upgrade again later, re-verification is fast.
This is handled automatically — there is no manual step required. If you are on a plan that supports custom domains and your domain is verified, Alva sends from your domain. Otherwise, it uses the default sender.
What Is DKIM and Why Does It Matter for Deliverability?
DKIM is worth understanding because it is the single most important factor in email authentication for custom domains. Here is what happens when a DKIM-signed email arrives at a recipient's inbox.
- Alva sends the email on your behalf. Before sending, a DKIM signature header is added to the email. This signature is a cryptographic hash of specific email headers and the message body, encrypted with a private key associated with your domain.
- The receiving email server (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, etc.) sees the DKIM signature and looks up the public key. It does this by querying the CNAME record you added to your DNS — the
_domainkeyrecord. This record points to where the corresponding public key is hosted. - The server decrypts the signature using the public key and compares it to its own hash of the email. If they match, the email passes DKIM verification. This proves two things: the email was authorized by the domain owner (you), and the email content was not modified in transit.
- The email lands in the inbox. DKIM-verified emails are significantly less likely to be flagged as spam. Combined with the Return-Path record (which associates bounce handling with your domain), your emails achieve the highest possible authentication status.
Without DKIM, email providers have no way to verify that an email claiming to be from yourbrand.com was actually sent with your authorization. This is why DKIM verification is not optional — Alva requires it before activating a custom domain.
Why Custom Domains Are Rare Among Digital Download Apps
Custom email domains are rare among Shopify digital download apps. Most apps send all download emails from a single shared sender address, and merchants have no ability to customize the "From" field. Some apps allow you to change the sender name (the display name that appears alongside the email address), but the actual email address remains the app's domain — which is what spam filters and customers actually evaluate.
Alva takes a different approach. Here is what Alva provides for email domain customization:
| Email Feature | Alva Digital Downloads | Most Other Apps |
|---|---|---|
| Custom sender domain | Yes | No (shared sender address) |
| DKIM verification | Yes | No |
| Return-Path alignment | Yes | No |
| Plan required | Pro ($18.99/mo) | N/A |
Alva is the only Shopify digital download app that provides full custom domain support with both DKIM and Return-Path verification. This is enterprise-level email infrastructure available starting at $18.99/month.
Who Benefits Most from a Custom Email Domain?
Custom email domains benefit every merchant, but some categories see outsized returns.
Premium Digital Product Sellers
If you sell high-value products — professional courses at $200+, enterprise software licenses, premium design asset bundles — your customers expect a polished experience. A generic sender address undercuts the premium perception you have built through your store design, product quality, and pricing.
Merchants with Established Brands
If customers already know and trust your domain from marketing emails, newsletters, or your website, your download emails should come from the same domain. Consistency across all customer touchpoints reinforces brand trust.
High-Volume Sellers
The more orders you process, the more important deliverability becomes. Even a 2% improvement in inbox placement on 1,000 monthly orders means 20 fewer customers who miss their download. That is 20 fewer support tickets, potential chargebacks, and negative reviews.
International Sellers
Customers in different countries have different levels of trust for unfamiliar sender addresses. In markets where phishing is common, customers are especially cautious about emails from unknown senders. A recognizable brand domain helps overcome this barrier. Alva's multi-language support combined with a custom sender domain means your international customers get download emails that feel local and trustworthy.
Custom Domain + Custom Email Templates
Custom email domains work with Alva's email template customization out of the box. You can customize the email subject, body text, colors, and layout while also sending from your own domain. You can even set per-product email templates — different email designs for different products — all sent from your verified custom domain.
The result is a fully branded email experience: your domain, your design, your message.
